What is EVLT

WHAT IS ENDOVENOUS LASER ABLATION THERAPY? (EVLT PROCEDURE)

Endovenous Laser Ablation Therapy (EVLT) is a minimally invasive procedure that uses catheters, lasers, and ultrasound for varicose veins treatments. This procedure is performed most often on veins that are still relatively straight and untwisted.

Dr. Bacha starts the EVLT procedure by inserting an IV catheter using local anesthetic into the affected vein. Using ultrasound technology, Dr. Bacha guides the tiny laser fiber through the vein for precise placement. Then, more layers of topical anesthetic are placed around the vein, and the lase is pulled out slowly. The procedure uses laser energy through a concentrated beam of laser light delivered with razor-sharp precision directly to the affected tissue. This ensures that the surrounding area is unaffected. Moreover, this causes blood to stop flowing through the vein. During recovery, circulation will become more efficient, and the faulty vein shrinks and fades. Dr. Bacha pays close attention to all the elements involved to ensure great medical results as well as the cosmetic effect on the treatment area.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE EVLT VARICOSE VEINS TREATMENT?

Patients can resume normal activities right away without having to be admitted to a hospital. However, after an EVLT procedure, Dr. Bacha recommends that patients wear compression stockings to reduce swelling and aid circulation. This decreases the amount of bruising or swelling that can happen after the procedure. Dr. Fadi Bacha usually performs an ultrasound the following day to ensure the successful closure of the treated vein and evaluate the presence of any rare complications.

WHAT ARE SOME SIDE EFFECTS

EVLT is one of the safest procedures to eliminate varicose veins. However, just like any procedure, there might be some minimal complications such as infection, bruising, Bleeding, swelling numbness, pulling sensation or phlebitis. Deep venous thrombosis is rare and will require the use of blood thinner if it happens for at least 3 months’ duration. However, these complications are very uncommon. Here at Lexington Vein Institute, Dr. Bacha explains to patients all potential risks and benefits prior to the procedure.

DOES INSURANCE PAY FOR EVLT OR VARICOSE VEINS TREATMENT?

Varicose veins are a medical condition that can have no symptoms for many years. However, when they become symptomatic they can cause pain, discomfort, leg fatigue, cramping, and other symptoms and complication. These complications can affect health, work, quality of life and interfere with adult daily living. Most insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid, will pay for procedures related to the treatment of symptomatic varicose veins, venous insufficiency, venous stasis ulcer, or bleeding varicose vein. They will not pay for the treatment of varicose veins that are not causing any symptoms or complications. They will also not cover the treatment for cosmetic spider veins.

Here at Lexington Veins Institute, we will explain in detail all issues related to your proposed treatment plan. Then, we will differentiate for you what is covered by your health plan and what is considered “cosmetic” treatment and help you understand your options better.
